In a context marked by market instability and increasing competitive pressures, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are compelled to strengthen their internal performance drivers. This research examines the influence of managerial innovation (MI) on the managerial performance (MP) of Moroccan SMEs, while incorporating the mediating role of the strategic and organizational environment (SOE). Adopting a sequential mixed-methods approach, the study combines an exploratory qualitative phase (11 semi-structured interviews with managers) and a confirmatory quantitative phase (a survey of 103 SMEs in the Souss-Massa region). Structural equation modeling using the PLS-SEM approach highlights a positive direct effect of MI on MP, as well as a partial mediation effect through the SOE, whose human dimension appears to be the most decisive. The findings contribute to the management literature by proposing an integrated MI–SOE–MP model validated in an emerging context, and offer practical managerial implications for SME leaders.
